How to get rid of dandelions?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Dandelions are one of Charlotte's most visible lawn weeds, thriving in our spring climate and producing seeds from late April through June. Their deep taproots make them challenging to eliminate completely, but multiple treatment approaches combined provide effective control.

Manual Removal Strategy

Dig dandelions when soil is moist (after rain is ideal) using a long-handled weeding tool. Grasp at the base and pull at an angle to extract the entire root—even small root fragments can regenerate. This method works best for small infestations. For larger areas, manual removal becomes impractical.

Herbicide Treatment Options

  1. Selective Broadleaf Herbicides: Products containing 2,4-D, MCPA, or triclopyr kill dandelions while preserving grass. Apply when plants are actively growing (April-May in Charlotte)
  2. Non-Selective Herbicides: Glyphosate kills everything; use only in non-planted areas like driveways
  3. Organic Alternatives: Citric acid or clove oil products work on young dandelions but require multiple applications

Prevention and Long-Term Management

A thick, healthy lawn naturally prevents dandelion establishment. Maintain proper fertilization, consistent watering, and appropriate mowing height. Overseeding thin areas crowds out potential weed space. In fall, dandelions accumulate energy in their roots—fall herbicide applications penetrate to the root system more effectively than spring applications.

Pro Tip: Fall (September-October) is the optimal time to eliminate dandelions chemically—plants translocate herbicides to roots as they prepare for winter dormancy, resulting in more consistent kill rates.
