Field Bindweed: A Persistent Perennial Challenge

Field bindweed is a deeply rooted perennial weed that presents one of the most challenging control situations in Charlotte landscaping. This aggressive vine produces heart-shaped leaves and pink or white funnel-shaped flowers. The plant spreads through an extensive rhizome system that can extend several feet deep into soil, making mechanical removal nearly impossible. A single broken rhizome fragment left in soil will regenerate new plants, perpetuating infestation indefinitely.

Understanding Field Bindweed Biology

Field bindweed's deep root system and rhizome network make it virtually immune to surface treatments. Rhizomes can reach 10+ feet deep and spread horizontally underground, creating new plants far from visible shoot growth. This biology explains why hand-pulling, hoeing, and most herbicide applications fail—they kill visible shoots while rhizomes remain viable, regenerating quickly after disturbance.

Multi-Year Control Strategy

  1. Year One - Initial Assessment: Map field bindweed extent and plan comprehensive treatment approach
  2. Herbicide Application: Apply glyphosate (non-selective) or dicamba (selective) to visible growth in spring and fall when actively growing. Summer applications are less effective
  3. Repeated Applications: Plan for 3-5+ applications throughout growing season. Each application gradually depletes rhizome reserves
  4. Suppression Strategy: While working to exhaust rhizomes, suppress visible growth through mowing or cutting that prevents flower and seed production
  5. Solarization (Optional): Cover affected areas with clear plastic for 4-6 weeks during hot summer to heat-kill deep rhizomes (only for isolated patches)
  6. Years Two-Three: Continue monitoring and treating any sprouting plants. Most successful eradication requires at least two growing seasons

Prevention of Reestablishment

Once field bindweed is eliminated, prevent reestablishment through dense turf maintenance. Thick, vigorous grass suppresses bindweed seed germination. Never allow treated areas to become bare, which provides opportunity for bindweed reestablishment.

Pro Tip: Field bindweed eradication is so challenging and time-consuming that many property owners accept suppression rather than attempting complete eradication. Professional treatment with persistence over multiple years offers the best hope for elimination.
