Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals
Wild onion (also called meadow garlic) is a cool-season perennial weed that emerges in fall and thrives through spring in Charlotte-area lawns. The distinctive onion odor when mowed makes this weed immediately recognizable. Wild onion bulbs can survive winter and regenerate even after mowing or herbicide applications, requiring persistent, multi-pronged elimination strategies.
Chemical Treatment: Selective post-emergent herbicides specifically targeting broadleaf weeds eliminate above-ground growth, but wild onion bulbs often survive. Multiple applications across consecutive seasons are typically necessary. Apply herbicides in fall (September-October) when wild onion is actively growing and bulbs are developing.
Mechanical Removal: Small populations can be hand-dug, but the entire bulb must be removed to prevent regrowth. Larger infestations require professional treatment. Sod removal and replacement eliminates wild onion completely but is expensive for extensive coverage.
Prevention Strategy: Maintain dense, healthy turf through proper fertility, aeration, and overseeding. A thick lawn prevents wild onion establishment and suppresses existing plants. Improve soil drainage if wild onion concentrates in wet areas.
