Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals
While fescue is less common in Charlotte than Bermuda, some northern Piedmont properties and shaded areas maintain cool-season fescue lawns. Overseeding fescue involves applying additional seed to existing turf to increase density, improve color, and fill thin areas. Spring overseeding in March-April works for fescue since it's cool-season grass preferring this temperature range. Fall overseeding in September-October also works well, providing establishment before winter stress.
Unlike Bermuda overseeding which replaces dormant warm-season grass with temporary cool-season cover, fescue overseeding works with the existing grass type. Since fescue grows in cool seasons, spring applications should be timed early—March-April before peak summer heat stress. Fall applications in September provide excellent establishment conditions and winter growth before next year's summer heat.
Fescue requires different fertilization timing than warm-season grass. Fertilize in spring (March-April) and fall (September-October) when fescue is actively growing. Summer fertilizer applications are generally avoided since fescue slows during heat. This contrasts sharply with Bermuda's summer feeding requirements.
