How to reseed a lawn?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Reseeding revitalizes thin, damaged, or weedy lawns. Unlike overseeding which adds seed to existing turf, reseeding implies replacing a significant portion of existing turf with new seed. Proper preparation and post-seeding care determine success.

When Reseeding is Necessary

Reseeding is appropriate when damage is extensive (more than 30% of lawn affected), when previous attempts at overseeding haven't produced adequate results, or when disease has devastated turf. Single-patch reseeding (addressing specific damaged areas) uses similar but simpler techniques.

Reseeding Process

  1. Removal: Remove dead turf and debris. Existing dead material competes with seed and prevents good soil contact
  2. Soil Preparation: Grade for proper drainage. Loosen top 4-6 inches and amend with quality compost
  3. pH Testing and Correction: Test soil; apply lime if pH is below 6.0. Allow time for incorporation before seeding
  4. Seeding: Apply seed at appropriate rate using drop spreader. Make two perpendicular passes for even coverage
  5. Topdressing: Apply thin compost layer to protect seed and improve germination conditions
  6. Watering: Daily shallow watering for 3-4 weeks keeps soil consistently moist during germination
  7. First Mowing: Mow only after grass reaches 2.5-3 inches. Early mowing stresses seedlings

Planting Season

Reseed in spring (March-April) or fall (August-September). Fall reseeding in Charlotte provides excellent results—soil temperatures are warm (70°F+), natural rainfall reduces irrigation needs, and fall fertilization supports establishment.

Pro Tip: Combine reseeding with aeration if soil is compacted. Aeration creates ideal seed-to-soil contact and supports deep root development in new grass.
