How to water new sod?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Critical Watering Requirements for New Sod Installation

Proper watering is the most important factor in successful sod establishment. New sod must develop roots quickly to become drought-resistant, and consistent moisture is essential during this critical period.

First Two Weeks After Installation

  1. Water immediately after sod is laid, soaking the sod and top 2-3 inches of soil
  2. Repeat watering 3-4 times daily for the first 7-10 days during warm weather
  3. Apply 1/2 inch to 1 inch of water with each application
  4. Reduce frequency after 2 weeks to once daily
  5. Maintain moisture so soil doesn't dry out but avoid waterlogging

Weeks 3-6: Transition Phase

Begin transitioning to deeper, less frequent watering to encourage deeper root growth. Water once daily for 2 weeks, then reduce to every other day. Monitor soil moisture by checking beneath the sod—it should feel moist but not saturated.

Pro Tip: In Charlotte's heat and humidity, early morning watering (5-8 AM) reduces disease risk while allowing maximum water absorption before the hottest part of the day.

After 6-8 weeks, your new sod should establish enough root depth to handle normal watering schedules. Adjust based on rainfall and seasonal temperatures.
