What height should I cut grass?

Mowing height significantly impacts grass health, appearance, and weed resistance. Too short mowing weakens grass and invites weeds; too tall grass appears unkempt. Optimal height depends on grass species and intended use but generally falls within a specific range for healthy turf.

Height Standards by Grass Type

• Warm-Season Grasses: Bermuda and Zoysia should be maintained at 2.5-4 inches. Bermuda can be cut shorter (0.5-1 inch) for sports fields or high-maintenance lawns, but home lawns benefit from 3-4 inches
• Cool-Season Grasses: Fescue and ryegrass prefer 2.5-3.5 inches height
• Transitional Blends: When maintaining both warm and cool-season grasses, cut at 3-4 inches as compromise height

Height Impact on Lawn Health

Taller grass produces larger root systems, improving drought tolerance. Longer leaves capture more sunlight for photosynthesis, improving vigor. Taller mowing height shades soil, reducing weed germination potential. Conversely, short mowing scalps grass, stressing roots and creating vulnerability to weeds and disease.

Mowing Frequency and 1/3 Rule

Mow when grass reaches approximately 1.5 times your target height. For 3-4 inch target, mow when grass reaches 5-6 inches. This means frequent mowing (sometimes weekly in spring) at proper height rather than infrequent scalping. Never remove more than 1/3 of blade length in a single mowing.
