Lawn scarification, also called dethaching, is the process of mechanically removing accumulated dead grass (thatch) and organic debris from the soil surface. Excessive thatch (exceeding ½ inch) restricts water and nutrient penetration, promotes disease, and creates poor rooting zones. When Scarification Becomes Necessary
