Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals
Overseeding timing depends on grass type and climate zone. In Charlotte's transitional climate, two distinct seasonal windows exist—one for cool-season grasses in fall, another for warm-season grasses in spring. Proper timing ensures strong germination and rapid establishment.
Fall is ideal for overseeding Charlotte lawns. Apply seed in late August through September when soil temperatures remain warm (70°F+) but air temperatures are cooling. This timing allows rapid germination and establishment before winter. For Bermuda and Zoysia lawns, fall overseeding with cool-season ryegrass provides winter color while warm-season grass dormancy makes it unattractive. This is the most common overseeding approach in Charlotte.
Spring overseeding thickens existing lawns before summer stress arrives. Soil temperatures reach 60°F+ by March in Charlotte. Seed establishes before hot summer weather creates stress. However, emerging warm-season grass growth may outcompete newly seeded cool-season grass. Spring overseeding works better on warm-season lawns, where seeding early-emerging cool-season varieties is less practical.
