Common (or wild) Bermudagrass becomes problematic when it invades cool-season turf areas or when superior Bermuda varieties need replacement. Common Bermuda spreads through rhizomes and stolons, quickly taking over adjacent turf. Its coarser texture and uneven growth pattern create unattractive, patchy lawns. Elimination requires complete eradication of all vegetative material and seeds.
Chemical Control: Non-selective herbicides like glyphosate (Roundup) kill both above-ground growth and rhizomes when applied at flowering stage (July-August). Multiple applications across consecutive seasons may be necessary due to dormant rhizomes. Sethoxydim selectively kills Bermuda in other grass types but requires multiple applications.
Mechanical Removal: Sod stripping removes all vegetation down to 2-3 inches, eliminating most rhizomes. This method works well for limited areas. For extensive coverage, herbicide treatment followed by overseeding with desired species provides cost-effective conversion.
Prevention Post-Removal: Dense plantings of desirable turf prevent Bermuda reinvasion. Maintain competitive turf density through proper fertilization, irrigation, and aeration.
