How to remove a lawn and start over?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Complete Lawn Removal and Renovation

Sometimes complete lawn renovation is warranted—severe weed/disease problems, incompatible grass species, or drastically poor soil conditions make renovation more practical than repair. Complete removal and replacement allows optimization of soil conditions, selection of appropriate grass type, and elimination of persistent problems. While expensive initially, this approach often proves cost-effective long-term.

Lawn Removal and Renovation Process

  1. Existing Vegetation Removal: Sod stripping removes grass, thatch, and top 1-2 inches of soil containing weed seeds and disease organisms. Herbicide treatment followed by sod stripping works for problem areas.
  2. Soil Assessment: Test pH, nutrients, texture, and drainage. Identify drainage problems, underground utilities, and structural issues before renovation.
  3. Soil Improvement: Add 2-4 inches of quality topsoil, incorporate organic compost, and apply lime or sulfur if needed to correct pH to 6.0-7.0.
  4. Grade and Drainage: Establish proper slopes (1-2% minimum) for drainage away from structures. Fill low spots and create level surface.
  5. Planting Selection: Choose appropriate grass species for sun/shade conditions and maintenance preferences. Sod provides immediate coverage; seed costs less but requires more patience.
  6. Post-Installation Care: Watering, weed control, and disease prevention ensure successful establishment.
Pro Tip: Spring or fall renovation timing provides ideal growing conditions for establishment before heat stress or cold dormancy.
