How to get rid of pachysandra?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Pachysandra Removal Challenges

Pachysandra, while valuable as shade groundcover, becomes invasive problem when spreading into turf areas or adjacent plantings. This aggressive ground cover spreads through rhizomes and can overtake uncontrolled areas. Complete elimination requires persistent effort combining chemical and mechanical approaches, as pachysandra's deep root system and spreading rhizomes resist simple removal.

Pachysandra Elimination Strategy

  1. Herbicide Application: Non-selective herbicides (glyphosate) effectively kill pachysandra foliage, but regrowth from rhizomes requires multiple applications. Apply during active growth (spring-summer) at highest label rate.
  2. Repeated Applications: Plan for 3-4 applications at 2-3 week intervals across growing season to exhaust rhizome reserves.
  3. Digging/Sod Removal: For small infestations, excavate entire area including soil to 6-8 inches depth containing rhizomes. Replant with desired species. This provides fastest removal but is labor-intensive.
  4. Mulching: Heavy mulching (6+ inches) eventually starves pachysandra through light exclusion. Takes months but avoids chemicals.
  5. Smothering: Cardboard layering preventing sunlight for extended period kills pachysandra and underlying vegetation, allowing clean replanting.
Pro Tip: Small pachysandra infestations are best handled through complete excavation before establishment of large patches.

Early detection and treatment prevent massive rhizome systems requiring extreme removal measures.
