What is lawn overseeding?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Overseeding Definition and Purpose

Lawn overseeding is the process of introducing grass seed into existing turf without removing established vegetation. Overseeding thickens thin lawns, introduces new genetic material with improved disease resistance, fills bare patches, and rejuvenates aging turf. This practice increases grass density, outcompeting weeds through superior turf coverage. In Charlotte's warm-season climate, fall overseeding with cool-season grasses (ryegrass) provides winter color while warm-season grasses remain dormant.

Overseeding Process

  1. Timing: Fall overseeding (September-October) for winter color in warm-season lawns. Spring overseeding (March-April) thickens warm-season grass as it emerges from dormancy.
  2. Lawn Preparation: Mow lawn short (1.5-2 inches). Core aeration creates soil contact essential for germination. Power-rake removes thatch restricting seed-soil contact.
  3. Seed Selection: Use varieties compatible with existing grass and appropriate for Charlotte climate. High-quality seed has higher germination rates and disease resistance.
  4. Application: Spread seed at recommended rate (5-10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft depending on grass type) using broadcast or drop spreader. Light raking improves seed-soil contact without burying seed.
  5. Establishment Care: Water daily to maintain seed-zone moisture for 2-4 weeks until germination and establishment. Gradual watering frequency reduction as seedlings develop.
  6. Fertilization: Light nitrogen application encourages rapid seedling growth. Wait until seedlings are 1 inch tall before first feeding.
Pro Tip: Combine fall overseeding with aeration for maximum impact—the improved seed-soil contact dramatically increases germination rates.
