Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals
Bermuda grass spreads aggressively into ornamental beds through underground rhizomes and surface stolons, choking desirable plants and creating maintenance nightmares. Its rapid growth, resilience, and multiple reproduction methods make Bermuda control in beds more challenging than turf management. Complete elimination requires persistent, multi-method approaches preventing rhizome regeneration.
Physical Barriers: Install steel landscape edging 4-6 inches deep with 1-2 inches above soil level, preventing rhizome and stolon crossing. Inspect edging regularly for breaches. This prevents new invasion but doesn't eliminate existing Bermuda.
Sod Removal: Remove infected bed soil (top 6-8 inches) containing rhizomes and replant with clean topsoil and new plantings. This complete removal prevents regrowth from existing rhizomes.
Herbicide Treatment: Apply glyphosate carefully to Bermuda foliage without contacting desirable plants. Multiple applications (every 14 days) through growing season maximize control. Sethoxydim selectively kills grass without harming broadleaf plants.
Mulch Management: 3-4 inches of quality mulch suppresses Bermuda rhizome sprouting. Replace mulch annually to maintain suppression effectiveness. Dense plant spacing reduces exposed soil.
Regular monitoring and prompt removal of emerging Bermuda prevents re-establishment cycles.
