How to remove dead sod?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Dead Sod Removal Process

Removing dead sod is necessary for lawn renovation projects, disease control, and complete species conversion. Dead, matted sod contains weed seeds, disease organisms, and pest habitat. Manual removal, heavy machinery, or herbicide treatment combined with tilling provides options depending on sod extent and future plans. Complete removal prevents disease and pest carryover into new plantings.

Dead Sod Removal Methods

Sod Stripping Machine: Professional sod cutters separate sod from soil to 1-2 inches depth. This equipment is available for rental from landscape suppliers. Stripped sod can be composted or removed to landfill. This method works fastest for large areas and is most thorough.

Manual Removal: For small areas, use a spade to separate sod from soil. Cut sod into 12x12 inch sections, prying them loose and stacking for disposal. Labor-intensive but effective without equipment investment.

Tilling and Herbicide: Apply glyphosate to dead sod, then till thoroughly 1-2 weeks later. Multiple tilling passes bury remaining sod material. Less clean than stripping but works for moderate areas. Avoid tilling into existing landscaping.

Scalping Method: Repeatedly mow extremely short, vertically rake aggressively, and till. Takes longer but requires minimal equipment. Suitable for thin dead sod layers.

Pro Tip: Remove sod completely before replanting—dead material left in place inhibits new seed germination and establishes disease risk.
