Complete Zoysia removal requires multiple aggressive approaches combining mechanical, chemical, and cultural methods across extended timeframes.
Mechanical Removal: Sod stripping completely removes above-ground growth and rhizomes, providing fastest complete elimination. For smaller areas, heavy cultivation with repeated tilling over 2-3 weeks exhausts rhizome reserves. This method works best for areas to be replanted soon.
Herbicide Treatment: Multiple glyphosate applications at full strength target Zoysia during active growth (summer). Applications every 10-14 days for 4-6 weeks may be necessary. Sethoxydim (Vantage or Segment) selectively kills Zoysia in other grass types but requires persistent reapplication.
Combination Approach: Herbicide applications weakening Zoysia followed by sod stripping and replacement with desired grass species provides fastest conversion. This combines cost considerations with speed.
Follow-up Vigilance: Monitor treated areas for sprouting rhizome fragments. Continue treatment of any regrowth immediately to prevent re-establishment.
