Foxtail grass, or bristlegrass, is an annual weed grass that thrives in summer heat across Charlotte lawns. The distinctive fox-tail seed head appears in mid-summer, quickly dispersing thousands of seeds. Foxtail aggressively competes with desirable turf and provides poor aesthetic appearance. Once established, foxtail proves difficult to eliminate, requiring persistent management throughout the growing season.
Prevention Focus: Prevent foxtail establishment through dense, healthy turf that suppresses weed grass germination. Maintain proper mowing height (2.5-3 inches for Bermuda) to shade soil surface and reduce germination opportunities. Core aeration and overseeding create conditions favoring desirable grass over weedy invaders.
Chemical Control: Pre-emergent herbicides applied in spring (March-April) prevent foxtail germination. Post-emergent options are limited once foxtail is established, though some selective herbicides provide partial control. Glyphosate kills foxtail but must be applied carefully to avoid desirable grass damage.
Mechanical Removal: Hand-pull foxtail before seed heads form to prevent spread. For extensive infestations, sod removal and replacement combined with prevention strategies provides fastest resolution.
