How to install landscape edging?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Installing Landscape Edging for Clean Garden Beds

Landscape edging creates clean borders between lawn and planting beds while preventing grass encroachment and containing mulch. In Charlotte's Piedmont climate where thick clay soils encourage spreading root systems, proper edging installation protects your investment and reduces maintenance. Several edging materials work well in our region, each offering distinct aesthetic and functional benefits.

Material Selection and Comparison

Installation Process

  1. Mark the bed edge with chalk or spray paint, creating smooth curves rather than sharp angles
  2. Dig a shallow trench 3-4 inches deep along the marked line
  3. Place edging material in trench, ensuring top edge sits slightly above soil level
  4. Backfill both sides with soil, compacting gently to secure edging
  5. Install landscape fabric beneath mulch to suppress weeds and separate soil from mulch
  6. Apply 2-3 inches of mulch, keeping material 2 inches away from plant stems
Pro Tip: In Charlotte's clay soils, metal edging performs exceptionally well because it resists rust better than expected and doesn't rot like wood alternatives in our humid summers.
