How to lay sod?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Installing sod provides instant lawn coverage and is ideal when time constraints or erosion concerns demand immediate results. Proper installation and post-installation care determine whether sod successfully roots and establishes as a permanent lawn component.

Site Preparation for Sod Success

Grade the area smoothly, removing rocks, debris, and old turf. The final grade should be slightly below hardscape (driveways, patios) to prevent water backup. Conduct a soil test and amend as needed with compost—sod's success depends partly on underlying soil quality. Water the prepared soil day before sod installation to ensure good rooting conditions.

Installation Process

  1. Begin in one corner, laying sod strips in a brick-like pattern, alternating staggered rows
  2. Press each piece firmly against the soil and neighboring pieces to eliminate air gaps
  3. Butt pieces tightly but don't overlap—this prevents rotting at overlaps
  4. Fill seams with compost to encourage root knitting
  5. Water thoroughly immediately after installation, ensuring moisture penetrates into underlying soil
  6. Keep sod moist for 2-3 weeks during establishment—water daily initially, then reduce frequency as roots establish
  7. Do not mow until sod is firmly rooted—usually 3-4 weeks after installation

Establishment Care

Avoid heavy foot traffic and equipment during establishment. Continue daily watering for the first week, reducing frequency but increasing duration as sod establishes. Light fertilization 4-6 weeks post-installation supports vigor.

Pro Tip: Install sod in spring or fall when soil is cool and natural rainfall supplements irrigation. Summer installation requires more intensive watering during Charlotte's heat stress.
