However, successful patching requires understanding the underlying cause to prevent recurrence.

Patching Methods

• Seed Patching: For small areas, roughing up soil and applying quality seed with topdressing creates economical repairs. Requires consistent moisture for 2-3 weeks during establishment
• Plug Patching: Planting small grass plugs (1-2 inches) in damaged areas provides faster coverage than seeding, particularly useful for warm-season grasses like Zoysia and Centipede
• Sod Patching: Installing sod pieces for larger problem areas provides immediate coverage, though cost is significantly higher than seeding or plugging
• Professional Repair: Severe damage from disease, insects, or chemical injury may require complete preparation before patching—addressing root causes prevents failed repairs

Preparation for Successful Patching

1. Area Preparation: Remove dead grass and thatch from damaged areas. Rough the soil with a rake to improve seed-to-soil contact
2. Soil Amendment: For clay soils, work in compost before patching to improve soil structure and drainage
3. Species Selection: Use seed or plugs matching your existing lawn. For overseeded areas, use appropriate cool-season or warm-season species
