Centipede grass offers Charlotte homeowners a low-maintenance alternative to Bermuda and Zoysia. This warm-season grass requires minimal fertilizer, tolerates shade better than Bermuda, and produces fewer thatch problems. Centipede's coarser texture and slower growth rate mean less frequent mowing and reduced input costs. However, centipede is somewhat sensitive to temperature extremes, acidic soils, and iron deficiency, requiring specific care strategies for success in the Piedmont region.

Fertilization Program for Centipede Grass

Centipede grass requires significantly less fertilizer than Bermuda—a simple 1-2 application program often suffices. Apply a balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10 or 15-15-15) in late April or early May as the grass breaks dormancy.
