How to care for centipede grass?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Centipede Grass: Low-Maintenance Warm-Season Turf

Centipede grass offers Charlotte homeowners a low-maintenance alternative to Bermuda and Zoysia. This warm-season grass requires minimal fertilizer, tolerates shade better than Bermuda, and produces fewer thatch problems. Centipede's coarser texture and slower growth rate mean less frequent mowing and reduced input costs. However, centipede is somewhat sensitive to temperature extremes, acidic soils, and iron deficiency, requiring specific care strategies for success in the Piedmont region.

Fertilization Program for Centipede Grass

Centipede grass requires significantly less fertilizer than Bermuda—a simple 1-2 application program often suffices. Apply a balanced fertilizer (like 10-10-10 or 15-15-15) in late April or early May as the grass breaks dormancy. If a second application is needed, apply it in mid-June, but avoid applications after June 30 to prevent stimulating soft growth vulnerable to cool-season stress. Excess nitrogen promotes thatch development and invites disease problems.

Proper Mowing and Maintenance

  1. Mowing Height: Maintain centipede at 1.5 to 2 inches, never cutting more than one-third of blade length per mowing
  2. Mowing Frequency: Mow when grass reaches 2.25 inches. Slower growth means less frequent mowing than Bermuda
  3. Shade Tolerance: Centipede performs better in partial shade than Bermuda, making it ideal for lawns with scattered tree coverage
  4. Iron Deficiency: Centipede often develops chlorosis (yellow color with green veins) due to iron deficiency. Apply chelated iron products to correct this condition
  5. Overseeding: Use winter overseeding with rye to maintain color during dormancy, similar to Bermuda programs

Soil pH and Centipede Success

Centipede grass is particularly sensitive to alkaline soils and performs best in the 5.0-6.0 pH range. If your Charlotte lawn tests above 6.0, adjusting pH downward improves centipede color and performance dramatically. Sulfur applications gradually lower soil pH over time.

Pro Tip: If centipede shows persistent yellow coloring despite good care, a soil test likely reveals high pH or underlying nutrient deficiencies that soil amendments can correct.
