Control Methods

• Grub Control: Reduce mole food sources by eliminating grubs through grub treatments. Moles often disappear when food becomes unavailable
• Earthworm Reduction: Unfortunately impractical and undesirable—earthworms benefit soil structure
• Mole Traps: Harpoon and scissor traps placed in active tunnels are effective. Check frequently and dispose of trapped moles humanely
• Exclusion: Install underground barriers (metal or sturdy plastic) 12 inches deep around garden beds and property perimeters
• Deterrents: Castor oil products repel moles temporarily but have limited effectiveness. Sonic devices show mixed results

Lawn Recovery

After trapping or when mole activity ceases, fill remaining tunnels with soil and overseed affected areas. The underlying tunneling damage can trap water and prevent proper root contact. Address compaction through aeration if extensive tunneling occurred.
