How to get rid of sedge in lawn?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Sedge: A Persistent Grass-Like Weed

Sedge is one of Charlotte's most troublesome lawn weeds because it's grass-like in appearance, making identification challenging for untrained eyes. Sedge has three-sided stems (versus round stems of true grasses), grows taller and coarser than desirable turf, and thrives in moist, poorly drained soils. Yellow nutsedge and purple nutsedge are the most common varieties in the Piedmont region, spreading through both seed and underground tubers that persist in soil for years.

Identification and Biological Understanding

Sedge has a yellowish-green color that stands out in healthy green turf. Three-sided stems are the key identification feature, though this requires close inspection. Sedge grows most vigorously from late June through early September. Underground tubers (nutlets) are the key to understanding sedge's persistence—herbicide treatment kills above-ground growth but tubers survive and regenerate the following year. For permanent elimination, you must destroy tubers through multiple treatments.

Multi-Season Elimination Program

  1. First Season Treatment: Apply post-emergent herbicide containing sulfentrazone or halosulfuron in June-July when sedge is actively growing. Multiple applications 2-3 weeks apart are necessary
  2. Cultural Control: Improve drainage through aeration and grading to reduce conditions favoring sedge germination
  3. Turf Density: Maintain thick turf through proper fertilization and overseeding that suppresses sedge germination
  4. Fall Treatment: Apply pre-emergent herbicide in September to prevent sedge tuber germination from underground reserves
  5. Second Year Management: Monitor for sedge regrowth from surviving tubers and treat promptly. Most sedge control requires at least two treatment seasons

Chemical Control Considerations

Sedge herbicides don't harm desirable warm-season grasses when applied correctly at recommended rates. However, these products are selective—they don't control all weed types. If your lawn has mixed weed problems, consulting with a professional ensures appropriate product selection.

Pro Tip: Sedge is most vulnerable to herbicide when actively growing in summer heat. Treatment timing significantly impacts effectiveness. Don't wait until fall when growth naturally slows—strike while sedge is actively developing underground tubers.
