How to overseed a lawn?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Overseeding introduces new grass plants into existing turf, thickening the lawn and displacing weeds and bare spots. In Charlotte's transitional climate, overseeding is crucial for maintaining year-round coverage and color, whether using cool-season or warm-season grass varieties.

Timing Overseeding Correctly

For warm-season grass lawns (typical in Charlotte), overseed in early fall (late August through September) when soil temperatures are still warm, promoting quick germination and establishment before winter dormancy. This provides green cover during winter when Bermuda and Zoysia naturally fade. Alternatively, overseed thin spots in spring for summer coverage.

Preparation and Application

  1. Mow lawn short (1.5-2 inches) to reduce competition and increase seed-to-soil contact
  2. Dethatch if necessary—excessive thatch prevents seed contact with soil
  3. Aerate if soil is compacted, creating ideal conditions for germination
  4. Select appropriate grass seed variety—typically cool-season ryegrass for winter color in Charlotte
  5. Apply seed with a drop spreader at recommended rates (usually 8-10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft)
  6. Topdress lightly with compost to cover seed and improve moisture retention

Establishment Care

Water frequently but shallowly (daily if possible) for 2-3 weeks to keep seed zone moist. Avoid foot traffic and mowing until grass reaches 2.5-3 inches. Once established, transition to deeper, less frequent watering. Apply light fertilizer 3-4 weeks after seeding.

Pro Tip: Charlotte lawns benefit tremendously from transitional overseeding—cool-season grass in winter, warm-season in summer creates attractive green color year-round despite dormancy periods.
