How to seed a lawn?

Expert lawn care advice from Charlotte’s trusted professionals

Establishing a Lawn from Seed in the Charlotte Region

Seeding offers a cost-effective alternative to sodding, though it requires patience and attention. Success depends on soil preparation, seed selection, proper application technique, and consistent moisture during the critical germination and establishment phases.

Soil Preparation is Critical

Begin with a soil test to determine pH and nutrient needs. Charlotte's soils often require amendment. Remove debris, rocks, and existing vegetation. Till existing soil to 6 inches depth or remove and replace with quality topsoil. Create a smooth, firm seedbed—not so loose that seeds sink into air pockets, nor so compacted that water cannot penetrate.

Seed Selection and Application

Critical Germination Phase

Water frequently and lightly to keep soil surface moist until grass reaches 2 inches (typically 3-4 weeks). Once established, transition to deeper, less frequent watering. Do not mow until grass reaches 3 inches tall. Avoid heavy foot traffic during establishment.

Pro Tip: Seed in spring (March-April) or fall (August-October) when temperatures are moderate and natural rainfall supplements irrigation, reducing your watering burden.
